To Get Off The List Of Billionaires, Bill Gates Promises To Give $20 Billion To His Own Foundation

Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft and philanthropist, said on Wednesday that he will give "almost all" of his money to the Gates Foundation.

He's going to give $20 billion to himself.

Bill Gates promised in 2010 to give away all of his money, but since then, the amount has grown, according to BBC.

Bill Gates tweeted about preventing pandemics, equal rights for men and women, the health of women, and climate change.

Gates wrote on Twitter,  ''Several huge global setbacks over the past few years have left many people discouraged and wondering whether the world is destined to get worse,”

“The pandemic is one of the biggest setbacks in history. The war on Ukraine is a gigantic tragedy for the entire world. The damage from climate change is already worse than most models predicted. The U.S. has taken a huge step backwards for gender equality and women’s health,” he said.

Gates wants the world to "go back to the advances the world was making".

Gates wants to spend $9 billion each year by 2026, up from $6 billion now.

Gates said that Warren Buffett, the CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, was just as important. He said that he plans to give all of his money to the foundation. This would take him off the list of the richest people in the world.

“I have an obligation to return my resources to society in ways that have the greatest impact for reducing suffering and improving lives. And I hope others in positions of great wealth and privilege will step up in this moment too,”

Gates said that his organization has helped stop pandemics, lower the number of deaths among children, get rid of diseases, improve food security and climate adaptation, make sure women and men have the same rights, and make schools do better.

In 2018, the Gates Foundation and DFID worked together to fund research into "super-crops" and livestock. The news release says that these crops are '' more nutritious, more resistant to disease and better able to withstand severe floods''.

He said in the interview that he helps animals live by giving them "vaccines or better genetics."

Gates said that the only way to stop another pandemic is for his team, GERM—Global Epidemic Response and Mobilization, to "vaccinate the world in six months."

“Here’s how a GERM response would work: The team’s disease monitoring experts would look for potential outbreaks. Once it spots one, GERM should have the ability to declare an outbreak and work with national governments and the World Bank to raise money for the response very quickly. Product-development experts would advise governments and companies on the highest-priority drugs and vaccines,” Gates said in a statement.

The Gates Foundation funded the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), which found 11 viruses that could cause the "next pandemic."

“The COVID-19 pandemic wasn’t the first to devastate the world and it won’t be the last. In a new series, we round up emerging infectious threats that have the potential to erupt into global pandemics,” the organization wrote on its website.
