Former President Donald Trump has widened his lead over President Joe Biden following their recent CNN debate, where Biden’s performance raised questions about his competence and fitness for office.
During the debate, Biden seemed uncertain and struggled to articulate coherent responses, leading many to view it as a clear win for Trump. Despite growing concerns over Biden’s ability to lead, his campaign has rejected calls for him to step aside in favor of a different Democratic contender.

Leading up to the debate, Trump held a 3% advantage over Biden among likely voters and a 6% lead among registered voters. Post-debate figures from the New York Times/Siena College poll show Trump now leads Biden by 6% among likely voters and 9% among registered voters.
Among likely voters, Trump holds a 49% to 43% advantage over Biden, while among registered voters, the margin is 49% to 41% in favor of the 45th president.
Significantly, support for Biden as the Democratic nominee has dwindled among the party faithful. Before the debate, 52% of Democrats backed him as the nominee, but this dropped to 48% afterward.
On the other hand, Trump saw a slight increase in support from Republicans, with 80% advocating for him to remain as the nominee before the debate and 83% doing so after.
Most voters, 74%, indicated that Biden is too old for the job, while only 42% felt the same about Trump.
The survey, conducted from June 28 to July 2, polled 1,532 voters.
