Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been on the offensive this month, pressing European allies and the United States to accelerate deliveries of air-defense interceptors as he pushes for concrete pledges at the NATO summit in Ankara. His message was blunt: Kyiv needs missiles and interceptors now to protect civilians and blunt Russia’s relentless strikes.
The urgency isn’t rhetoric — Ukraine says Russia launched a massive overnight barrage of 68 missiles and 351 attack drones that overwhelmed defenses and left ballistic missiles getting through to strike the capital. Ukrainian commanders warned that a shortage of Patriot interceptors left key gaps in the defensive ring, a failure with tragic human consequences.
President Trump’s bilateral engagement with Zelensky at the summit produced a real, tangible step: a U.S. pledge toward licensing Patriot production for allied manufacture, a move the Ukrainian leader and Western officials framed as a way to plug the interceptor shortage faster. Conservatives who have demanded a policy of strength should welcome a commander-in-chief who turns words into weapons and industrial capacity.
Yet the need for American leadership is highlighted by the shameful lag among many European capitals, where stockpiles and political will have lagged while cities burn. NATO leaders floated fresh pledges and promises of support, but talk without timely hardware leaves Ukraine exposed and hands strategic advantage back to Putin.
Zelenskyy’s pressure on ally governments is not grandstanding — it’s a stern reminder that deterrence requires munition, not merely moral outrage. He warned that the West has the means to stop the terror but must choose to act decisively rather than circle committees and calendar votes as people’s lives hang in the balance.
Patriotic Americans should demand a clear, tough policy: arm Ukraine enough to win, accelerate production through allied factories, and make partners carry their share of the burden. If we truly value freedom and the rule of law, we back allies with the tools to defend themselves and restore a balance of power that keeps war away from our shores.
