Governor Roy Cooper of North Carolina had yet another meltdown after the state legislature overrode his veto on a 12-week abortion ban. Instead of handling the priorities of the Republican-controlled legislature, as he should, Cooper has taken an extreme stance and declared a State of Emergency for public schools, despite no Executive order being involved.
The governor’s irrational and extreme reaction to public school choice is causing nothing but chaos in the state. Cooper’s brief remarks were nothing more than fear-mongering talking points about how private schools will be “unaccountable to the public”, and he warned that “if you care about public schools in North Carolina, it’s time to take immediate action and tell them to stop the damage that will set back our schools for a generation.”

Cooper’s hypocrisy is on full display, given that he sent his own daughter to private school. He ranted about tax dollars, including how private school vouchers and tax breaks “drops an atomic bomb on public education.” However, the Republican agenda focuses on allowing parents and children the right to choose the school that best suits their needs.
Despite Cooper’s appeal to North Carolinians, there has been strong opposition to his manipulative tactics. State Representative Tricia Cotham even switched from the Democratic Party to the GOP, giving them a veto-proof majority in both chambers.
Cooper’s use of the gubernatorial bully pulpit is nothing more than a fake and heavily political state of emergency. His shameless appeal to North Carolinians is even more apparent in a video message that serves as the pinned tweet on his official account.
The state legislature is already working on negotiating a budget that includes pay raises for teachers, tax cuts for families, and expands school choice for students. The Governor’s political stunts and misinformation are simply counterproductive and a desperate attempt to sway public opinion rather than listen to the true needs of the people of North Carolina.
