Chaos returned to Delaney Hall in Newark this week as anti-ICE militants and federal officers collided in scenes that should alarm every American who cares about law and order. Videos from the gates show protesters chaining themselves together, throwing objects, and taunting uniformed ICE personnel with chants of “you will hang,” while authorities made arrests to restore basic security.
Inside the sprawling GEO Group-run facility, reports say roughly 300 detainees launched a coordinated hunger and labor strike, alleging spoiled food, inadequate medical care, and retaliatory treatment by guards. Families and advocacy groups have amplified those claims, but the chaos outside made a sober oversight visit nearly impossible and left the public with conflicting narratives about what’s actually happening behind the razor wire.
Democratic officials turned their presence into a headline-grabbing spectacle, with New Jersey’s governor saying she was denied full access while other lawmakers did gain entry and later reported tense encounters, including one senator who says he was pepper-sprayed amid the melee. The optics were predictable: elected leaders posing for cameras while federal agents did the dangerous work of keeping order at a facility where emotions and stakes are high.
The Department of Homeland Security and the private contractor running Delaney Hall have pushed back against some of the allegations, calling visits suspended because of the unrest, while activists insist the strike is proof of inhumane conditions. Whatever the truth inside, there is no excuse for mobs to threaten the lives of federal officers or to turn a Memorial Day weekend into a carnival of lawlessness.
Hardworking Americans deserve secure borders and a justice system that protects communities and the men and women who enforce our laws; patriotism doesn’t look like chanting about hanging public servants. Prosecutors should enforce the law against violent threats and obstruction, elected officials should prioritize accountability over photo-ops, and our leaders must fix a broken immigration system that fuels these combustible clashes.
