Newsom’s Coin Design Request Backfires, Highlights CA Woes

California’s Governor Gavin Newsom asked for ideas for a new coin design, but the responses he received weren’t what he expected. The state is set to release a $1 coin to honor innovation, but instead of getting positive suggestions, Newsom was bombarded with designs that highlighted the struggles and issues facing California.

Many of the responses featured designs that showcased the homeless crisis in urban areas, with images of tents and debris. Others submitted designs that highlighted the ongoing problems in San Francisco, including the issue of human waste being seen on city streets. Some designs even referenced the mass exodus of residents and the high gas prices in the state.

One user even submitted a design featuring President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping, mocking Biden, Newsom, and the effort to clean up San Francisco for a meeting with the Chinese leader.

While the idea of having the public design a coin may have seemed like a good one, the response on social media was not what Newsom had hoped for. The governor incorporated a Taylor Swift reference in his request for design submissions, which further fueled the negative feedback.

It’s unclear what the actual California innovation coin will look like, but it’s clear that Newsom won’t forget how badly he’s messed up the state of California. Newsom’s request for coin designs turned out to be a disaster, and it serves as a reminder of the challenges facing the once-great state.
